Since the publication in December 2012 of the first edition of Modern Locomotives Illustrated (MLI) covering electro-diesel fleets, a huge amount of change has taken place in the class. GBRf now operates a sizeable, fully rebuilt fleet, while Network Rail uses a pair of modernised locos. Many of the original designs are still in service, with a number preserved.
